Bobo Brunches at
the Britannia101
Hi all, I’m planning to try something a little new at the
Britannia101 in the New Year and I’d be very interested in what you
think of the idea. The Bobo Brunch is a trial-concept borrowing heavily from a
French/continental tradition of social intellectual discussion over food (the
French using intellectual as a term of interest and endearment rather than as a
term of disparagement).
What I have in mind is a programmed series of Sunday late
morning brunches at the Britannia, where invited speakers will talk in a late
breakfast early lunch setting about a topic of general or specific interest in a
very informal and intimate manner. No flip-charts or overhead projectors, just
one or two people talking to others about something of interest. The setting
within the Britannia would be café style, a simple range of breakfast food on
offer, coffees, teas, aperitifs, wine, whatever. Participation would be
encouraged but in no sense obligatory. Topics would range from Philosophy, to
Theoretical Physics, some dates could involve a Poet/Satirist/humorist engaging
in political issues, environmental issues would also be a ‘hot’ topic for
discussion.
The term Bobo is a French expression,
the term is short for bourgeois and bohemian, two social castes no one
ever expected to find mixed up together "highly educated folk who have one
foot in the bohemian world of creativity and another foot in the bourgeois realm
of ambition and worldly success"
My initial straw poll of two people produced the following
responses “Wow, that’s a great idea, fantastic” and … “I can’t think of anything
worse”
So … I’d really like to know what you think.
