Britannia101 Neighbourhood Impact and Customer Satisfaction Survey
Community Engagement

As part of the Britannia101's commitment to responsible business and being a good neighbour, we have carried out a Neighbourhood Impact and Customer Satisfaction Survey. The outcome from this survey will be used to inform and direct our current operating and licensing policies and will also play a role in helping us make judgements about future plans.

We distributed around 300 survey forms to households in the immediate vicinity, receiving a response of around 25%; around 100 forms were picked up by customers in the bar with about 75% of these being returned, the form was also available on our website, around twenty people used this method to respond. A total of 190 responses were received of which 87 people described themselves as customers (not neighbours), 10 as neighbours (not customers), 89 as both neighbours and customers, and 14 left this section unanswered.

As promised The Britannia101 will make a donation of £50 to Lancaster Homeless Action (the local charity we support) in respect of the forms returned to the bar or submitted on-line. We would like to thank all of you for participating in a real local consultation exercise and hope you appreciate the results presented here.

On a lighter note, I was concerned at a few suggestions that my survey hadn't followed the British Standard of excellence for surveys (or something like that). So if anyone is interested i'll make the following offer, If want, you can come in and check the raw data, if my data and analysis is less than 95% correct i'll donate £25 to a charity of choice and will eat the offending questionnaire. On the other hand, that works both ways if my data is good, you donate £25 and eat the survey form :-)

Now. I reckon that with so much data there's only a 95% chance that i've got it all 95% correct, so the real question is ... "Do you feel lucky ....?"

Thank you for taking the time to read this message, our Survey Analysis follows directly below.

Best wishes,
Richard Dow BII, DPS.

Britannia101 Neighbourhood Impact and Customer Satisfaction Survey
Analysis of results

This image contains an area map summarizing the results of the following questions. Click on the image to enlarge it to full size, it will take about 20 seconds to download but since it has some of the most important and interesting information on it, its worth the wait.

The questions answered on the map are:

1. General impressions:
how would  you compare the Britannia101 now to what it was around a year ago
(before we took over)?

2. Visual amenity:
we have invested heavily in trying to improve our outside areas, the beer garden, the restaurant garden and our frontage. Would you say the visual impact of the Britannia101 is ... very good; good; poor; very poor.

3. Tidiness:
Is the tidiness of our bar and the area around our bar  ...  very good; good; poor; very poor.

4. Noise:
Noise is often one of the most problematic issues for people living in the vicinity of a pub especially since the onset of the smoking ban. Because of the importance of this issue, there are several questions to answer:
Would you say that ...
Compared to noise from other similar or other local pubs the Britannia101 is ...
very good; good; poor; very poor.
The control of noise from the Britannia101 is ... very good; good; poor; very poor.

OTHER QUESTIONS

Noise Policy

We asked how often people were affected by noise, and also whether people felt our policy of use of our outside areas should be changed.

Of the 99 respondents who described themselves as neighbours:

Eighty six said they were never affected by noise from the Britannia, six said they were occasionally affected by noise and six said they were frequently affected by noise. (one person did not answer this question).

Sixty four people said we should allow people outside to drink until close of business, seventeen said we should not allow drinking outside after midnight, nine people said we should not allow drinking outside after 11pm and two people felt we should bring people in at 10pm, four people left the question unanswered.

Community - Local Crime; Mini-Festivals

The Britannia101 is committed to proactive engagement within our community, for example we are seeking to promote a local pub-watch scheme where local pubs will work together exchanging information to combat crime and drunkenness. We are also hoping to help support and promote social recreation, for example local mini-festivals - starting off with this Halloween! - these events will involve local businesses, pubs, the Gregson Community centre and other organisation and individuals in working together to create something fun and enjoyable for everyone.

Of 190 respondents:

LOCAL CRIME: 168 people would like our local pubs to work together to help reduce crime and disorder. 22 people we either not-interested or left this question unanswered.

MINI FESTIVALS: 166 people would like our local pubs, community organisations and local authorities to support and promote mini-festivals in the Freehold area, 3 people would not want this at all, and the rest of the respondents were not bothered or didn't answer,

FOOD The Sun and Moon Tapas Bistro

You may not be aware, but the Britannia101 now hosts a Tapas restaurant the Sun and Moon, we didn't ask much about it since this was partly a bit of shameless self-promotion - the Sun and Moon website is www.sunandmoontapas.co.uk (check it out). The food, staff and surroundings are fantastic.

169 respondents liked the idea of having a local restaurant in the Freehold area, one person out of 190 didn't, the rest of the respondents weren't bothered.

ART

The Britannia101 hosts at least one, usually two exhibitions by local artists, we are considering whether to start exhibiting installation artworks -ie great big things outside which you may love or hate, but which you will find interesting.

149 people were interested in the idea of art and supporting local artists; four people did not want this to happen, thes rest of the respondents were not bothered.

Music and events

The Britannia101 has a policy of supporting local musicians and groups, every Thursday we put on live music, we avoid loud rock bands and go for Jazz groups, world folk music, duos and solo artists, the music finishes around 11pm. Its always free and we would like people to support these events as they support local talent and are pretty much loss leaders for the pub - we just love having these guys play!

165 people would like to see more live music from local musicians, 18 people would not, 7 people did not respond or weren't bothered.

Local business
We asked if you would like to see more local businesses open up in the Freehold area, within the Britannia, the Gregson Centre and the Park Road/Ullswater Road area.

148 respondents said yes they would, 28 people said no they would not, 14 people failed to answer or weren't bothered

Type of business Percentage of the people who said yes to new business
coffee shop 55%
butchers 43%
wine bar 30%
local printing company 12%
patisserie 52%
chemist 33%

We also gave you chance to make your own suggestions, this is what you came up with ...

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

We offered you chance to make any other comments or suggestions you wished about the Britania101. I'd like to say a special thank you to those of you who took the time to do this, and a huge thank you to all of you who created a wave of positive comment and congratulations about what we have achieved here in the last sixteen months, it quite took my breath away.

your own comments or suggestions
1) Like the Gregson, but unlike many other places, I would be happy for my mother, sister, partner or daughter to use the Brit unaccompanied in complete safety, free from immoderate language or behaviours, as indeed many women do. (2) Brit offers an environment where people from all walks of life and age groups co-mingle happiliy. (3) Brit customers are as likely to order a cafetierre or fruit juice as an alcoholic drink.
A lot more noise - control required! Or Face legal action as you have ignored your neighbours!
All staff are extremely friendly and are a credit to the service you all provide.
Better heating in smoking area. Sockets outside for wifi users who smoke
Better real ale would be a huge improvement
Bonfire night party activity organisation * no e mail address given*
Capuccino maker / Keep it like this you have made my life even nicer
Carry on improving and reviewing
carry on with the good work - involvement of community within events is what is usually lacking in many areas.
DJ's always too loud. Also why every Saturday? Can't we have some acoustic music on Saturdays as well as all these DJ's? Note that you don't have as many regular customers on Saturday cos they don't like it either but at least I have the bottle to say it. Tapas food too expensive for a local venue.
Do more frequent customer surveys
Duke box with alternative mix of musix that can be accessed at some times but not all. Always have good straws.
Fantastic that you can use wirelass internet
Fine! * no e mail address given*
Football final scores on Saturday afternoon/TV on for important sporting events. Sport is usually completely missing
free beer
Front heating?
Great news for the area, a pleasure to come into.
great pub music outside (quietly, but probably still too loud!?) paper towels behind bar full length sketch of bar including all staff by me (ha ha!)
Hasn't used Tapas Bistro yet
Having lived on Ullswater Road for 18 years we have seen many a Landlord in this establishment, but have to say in the last year you guys have transformed the place for the better, you have put a lot of work into this especially the outside areas which look really good. A much needed improvement to the area. We have eaten in your Tapas a couple of times which was most enjoyable. We wish you continued success.
heated area out front
Hi - a lot of people use the outside areas because they smoke, and I recall that there is a least one heater there. Many of your customers are also interested in green issues. If you don't do this already I think you should source your electricity from a renewable energy provider, so that essentially you are transferring energy from the wind turbines to the people outside the pub rather than heating the environment. Also maybe you could have a big mox with old hats and coats for people who are chilly!
I am really interested in mini festivals i.e.all pubs celebrate St Patrick's day but none celebrate St George's Day, Independence Day(Polish). Will ask for further ideas from different cultures.
I find the Brit an excellent place to go, safe friendly and accommodating. It has made a great difference and presents a worthy alternative to town. I feel happy to both recommend the place and bring other people there.
I found it difficult to answer this survey effectively as it is poorly laid out and appears to ask leading questions. Is it really a customer satisfaction survey or market research? Eg local printing company, not what I would think of for this area. I like what you have done with the rear seating area but loathe the tables on the street with the Carling brollys and barriers. I don't see a need for it when you have an excellent seating area to the rear. I can't answer the outside policy (is this just information gathering to present a case with licensing?) because of the above point. I don't mind if people stay outside till close but don't like the out-front area at any time! I hope you find these comments useful. I would welcome a reply. Please excuse my cynicism if your intentions but as my wife says "cynicism is borne of experience". Thanks for taking the time to consult the locals.
I have concerns re impact on local parking - assuming people might want to park in local vicinity whilst making use of additional services
I moved to this area about 3 years ago and frequently on walking past the Britannia - then - loud music from karaoki etc could clearly be heard despite the doors and windows being closed. On walking past now even when live music is on, no noise can be heard even from across the road. I consider this a major improvement. The building housing the pub has been there for a lot of years longer than anyone who currently owns or rents a property in the area. If moving near to an existing pub anyone with any common sense would realise there will be some noise from the public. In the case of the Brit, I have noticed less over the past year and heard many very positive comments from other people in the area about how much better it is. An aide point, I think it ludicrous that the new wide side doors are now allowed to be used due to council intervention. These are doors wide enough for wheelchairs and anyone with mobility problems to use particularly as a gentle slope accesses them. For the Brit to be fully involved in local community events, this access is needed.
I think ou guys are doing a great job with this pub - great idea re Sun and Moon pub quiz. Both the Brit and the Gregson continue to do wonders for the local community - very impressed. Keep up the good work. Proud to be a freehold local
I think this is great, you're doing great and keep up the good work. I wish you could influence smokers not to drop their fag ends on the pavement. Preferably to give up smoking altogether!
I thought the restaurant was great when we came but also really like it when you served food in the bar too - any plans to serve tapas in the bar again?
If you are going to extend the food then do not let things go the same way as the Gregson. When the Gregson first started doing food it was of excellent quality and availability. Nowadays it doesn't seem to care what or how it serves food. This is the main reason why I've let my membership lapse and no longer eat there. I've eaten at the Brit several times now and so far all has been good (you tend to be heavy on the veg options, one or two more meaty choices would be very good).
I'm well chuffed that this place is so lovely, it's just what Freehold needs
I'm well chuffed that this place so lovely, it's just what freehold needs.
It generally rocks
It has been a fantastic change and has much improved the area for local people. Well managed with friendly staff and great food and entertainment (don't like the stools though). Please can we have a juke box?
It is great to have the Britannia as a local pub. You made a great effort to make it into a nice space and I definitely think its worked. We need more spaces like this, more music, art and all.
It's all good - we like!
Its brilliant that there is a wireless network and internet free of charge!
It's nice to have live music but sometimes it's difficult to (a) just listen to the band (due to noise from people who don't want to) or (b) chat with friends if you wan't want to listen. It's the layout of the pub, really. No one's fault!
Just keep up the good work and more plug sockets for lap tops
Just keep up the good work, I think more wrought iron work would be good
Just to say you have affected a massive all-round improvement at the Brit - cheers!
Just want to say that what you have done in the past 12 months is excellent, so great to have such a funky local to complement the Greggy. Thanks.
keep it up - and put more chorizo and squid on the menu
Keep smiling, you're doing a fab job in keeping us smiling
Keep the beer garden open during opening hour
Keep the Wainwrights. More real ales and regular guest beers please.
Keep up the good work
Keep up the good work - excellent pub
Keep up the good work!
Keep up the good work!
Liaise with Rose Tavern and Freeholders, encourage them to be more sensitive to needs of local residents vis-à-vis noise, litter nad behaviour outside the premises.
Looks like a cool place - good luck
LOVING HAVING A FRIENDLY CHILLED LOCAL WITH A FAB TAPAS BISTRO - MAKE ME FEEL LIKE I'M LIVING SOMEWHERE FAR MORE COSMOPOLITAN THAN LANCASTER!
More detail given to smoking area for future colder months. Ashtrays please, not dog bowls.
More live music
More outdoor heaters please
More outside heating, internet access outside. Wider choice on the menu. More surveys
music events - no, but yes if acoustic only
MY FIRST VISIT
New female toilets /darts board / more comfy chairs (as opposed to stools)
Noise policy - whatever suits the Brit best. Re Sun and Moon - my less than total enthusiasm is not because I don't appreciate it but I just rarely eat out. That's just how it is but perhaps I'll change my life long habits! Art - I do hae an issue about artistic integrity. Recent exhibition was expressed by 7 year old son of a friend as 'yukky' - have to say I agree. Many thanks for the buzzing creative positive impact the Britannia 101 after years of negative, destructive (telephone box used to be frequently vandalised) atmosphere. Well done! Much appreciated and proud to have it at the bottom of my road.
Now officially my ' best pub in Lancaster '. Keep up the good work
Only real problem for my partner and I is the temperature of the pub. This fact alone has led us to frequent the pub less often in recent weeks. There is surely no need for ceiling fans apart from in hot weather, and the central heating should be on more and switched on earlier.
Organ grinding monkeys are good! Proper espresso coffee
people living here knew there was a pub here, it is a quiet pub and great for the local community.
qu.4 noise - noise from within Brit well controlled. Don't know re noise in comparison to other pubs in area. Control of noise from the Brit very patchy and not wholly effective. Weekends worse for noise. Closing outside areas - 10pm Sun-Thurs, 11pm Fri&Sat. Please see email dated 8.1.07. Since that email have decided to respond to questions 2, 7 & 8 as well as qualified response to qu.4.
qu4b - noise control - did not know it was controlled.
Re community crime - "depends"
Re general impressions - wasn't here a year ago
Re noise - Can't asses as not a near neighbour but not noticed/heard noisy or unruly behaviour when been outside or passing by - and admire your policy of neighbour consulting, wishes her closest pub did same. Re outside - depends how effective active management is. I'd just say well done to Richard and the team - you've transformed the place. Brilliant effort - well done!
Re Noise - not local resident so hard to judge
Re noise affected - did live almost opposite and were never been bothered
Re noise affected - don't know specifically. Re Sun and Moon - food grossly overpriced and as such only infrequebt diners. We both cook and enjoy good food but also value for money. More variety of real ales would reduce our time in The Three Mariners
Re noise control - score due to 2active management. W e think it is a welcome addition to the local area as a social venue. However, we hope that it would be able to operate in conjunction with the Gregson centre as another good local resourse.
Re Outside area - open until 10.30pm
Really good pub
resident - Cromwell Road
Sometimes live music is a bit too loud to chat with friends
Staff are fab, brilliant service
The bar is far too cluttered, it's an obstacle course to get a drink. I've ticked 'no' to more music because they are too loud for the size of the bar, otherwise I've no objection to music.
The Britannia 101 is the best version of the Brittania in the last 20 years
The staff are all really friendly and make it a comfortable place to go and socialise
Try to get a later license & sell takeaway beer to party goers More hansome male locals. Thankyou
TV on more
vegan food
We are affected by noise 2/3 times a week but having only lived there a few months could not say if it was better or worse. Also not sure where the noise is from - ie. greg or brit. I think quite often it is people on their way home drunk. The smokers will be outside whatever so no point taking away the chairs, just keep on top of the active management - no one reads a sign! I would not have gone in the brit first year but now I think it is a great alternative to the gregson, some cheaper food would be good.
Well done all!!
Well done on turning a distaster(previously) into a success.
Young people and family friendly. Perhaps something could be included for young teenagers e.g. pool competitions, quiz or gane sessions, talent performance events. * ( no e mail address given) *
